Responding to the new UK Government’s decision to formally scrap the Rwanda Deportation Plan, Experts by Experience from the VOICES Network said:

“It is a relief that the Rwanda bill has been scrapped off by the government, but they must now act swiftly to create safe routes for those fleeing persecution.”

“No-one is illegal when you’re fleeing persecution, we all yearn to build a new life and add value to the country that has given us refuge.”

“Rwanda was never a safe place to send refugees, the plan was just plain ridiculous – inhumane and impractical.”

“The Rwanda plan was never the will of the people – it was simply inhumane, ineffective and incredibly expensive.”

“Congratulations to the new Prime Minister for understanding that human rights are not a political card to use for a political campaign and that people’s welfare, safety and dignity should [be] prime over the rigidity of immigration boundaries and xenophobic politicians! Now we are hoping that British politicians will support ways to work with those who want to restore peace in their respective countries, have fair diplomatic relations with countries who are still struggling to meet a basic standard to provide peace and safety to their citizens. I believe the best way to reduce immigration is to help people to feel safe and cover their basic needs where they are; if this is not achievable then creating safe routes to safer places should be a priority in this new government!”
